Chris Stout, photo by The Mollis FolkWorld's best CDs of 2004
Both FolkWorld's editors and some of FolkWorld's regular contributors have chosen their favourite CDs of 2004. Chris Stout's album made it the editors' No.1...
CD Top 10 and Top 5s for the year 2004

The Story and Legacy of The Bothy Band (1974-79)
Three decades ago, traditional Irish music underwent a major face-lifting. Though the members of The Bothy Band parted company after five years only, Irish music was different after their demise. Because of their unique sound and tight playing, The Bothy Band has been hailed as a "rock'n'roll band in folk clothing" (Irwin) and their performances like "being in a jet when it suddenly whipped into full throttle along the runway". Most of today's Irish music groups were unthinkable if it wasn't for the Bothies. Imagine: no Altan, no Dervish, no Lunasa! Walkin' T:-)M reminds of the band.

Bruvoll & HalvorsenBruvoll and Halvorsen's Norwegian Nightsongs
Melodic, melancholic, at times advanced. Singer Jon Anders Halvorsen and guitar player Tore Bruvoll are the young stalwarts of traditional song in Norway's Telemark county. Walkin' T:-)M tried to find out how somebody of Jon Anders and Tore's generation became involved in playing traditional music.

A Flook Shot Revisited!
So much has been written about this band that I hardly know where to start myself. As you can read elsewhere on the Folkworld website, this band are a huge favourite with our reviewers. In the last 9 years (the big "X" comes next year, and boy there will be some partying to match!) Flook have leapt from strength to strength; their musical development has seen their tunes become tighter, more solid, while still leaving room open for improvisation. The Hurdy-Gurdy in Spain
Pio Fernandez introduces the Spanish hurdy gurdy, the Zanfona, takes the reader back into the musical history of this instrument and describes how it survived over the time. Finally, he also writes about today's players.

Elandir & Lunasa at Notes d'Equinoxe
The opening of the third Swiss festival "Notes d'Equinoxe" was dedicated to Ireland and featured two brilliant sets of Irish music. Elandir, a Swiss based group, opened the night with their set and were followed by Ireland's well known instrumental line-up Lunasa. Adolf "gorhand" Goriup was there to report.

Nynke Laverman - Fado from the Lowlands of Friesland
Since Amalia Rodrigues the Fado music has always been known around the world. The last few years many new artists have great success and I think the Netherlands, the Fado music is one of the most popular kinds of traditional music. Singers like Cristina Branco, Mariza and Dulce Pontes often perform here in theatre and on television. Last summer a remarkable cd was issued by the young Dutch performer Nynke Laverman. She recorded Fado music in her own language, Friesian. This language which is spoken in the upper north of Holland in a region called Friesland, is an official language. The cd has received many good critics in the Netherlands and after hearing it I wondered why Nynke Laverman choose to mix Fado music with poems in her own language. As others I was surprised that the two cultures seem to mix really well. In this article a brief introduction to a Fado singer from the lowlands: Nynke Laverman.

Scottish Fiddle Galore at Fiddle 2004 in Edinburgh
Edinburgh, as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, is always worth a journey, at any time of the year. The annual Fiddle Festival in November comes as welcome bonus for all folk music fans - even though it is worth the journey on its own, especially of course for fiddle players... The festival is now already in its nineth year, providing a successful combination of high profile evening concerts (feat. the Chris Stout Band and Session A9) and a range of daytime workshops, masterclasses and fiddle recitals.

Czech folk music with Nerez
Nerez Nerez in Prague, October 2004. As Paul Verdonk was planning a last minute trip to Prague, he cast his eye on an article in Folkworld on Chech folk music (Folk in Tschechien, Article in the German version of issue 29). Looking through different concert papers and magazines, he recognised the name and place of one band, and found out it was a few blocks away from his hotel. Here he reports about an impressive evening of music.

Robb JohnsonRobb Johnson and the Irregular Records Label
Songs from the European Urban Experience. Robb Johnson has found a unique niche in the realm of English singer/songwriters. He is recognised by many as "Britain's finest songwriter of the last decade" for songs that are "incisive and clever and witty and you can sing them on your way to work". Furthermore, Robb's own label has issued several albums of fellow artists. Walkin' T:-)M set out on a quest for an entirely new genre: English Chanson!

30 years Tønder Festival
A photo report of the 30th festival. As this is the 30th issue of FolkWorld, we want to look back to the 30th issue of the Tønder Festival, which took place end of August 2004. A full review was already in FolkWorld 29, so we are restricting ourselves here to a photo review; all photos by The Mollis.

Irish Night with Eoin Duignan and Karan Casey Band
The Irish Nights at the Kammgarn in Schaffhausen took place from November 10th to 13th and offered a very interesting program. Adolf "gorhand" Goriup went only for one evening, to see Eoin Duignan and Karan Casey with band.

Karan Casey Band in Tübingen
What would you do if you were the lead singer of one of the top Irish trad music bands of today? You'd go solo, that's what you'd do. And this is precisely what Karan Casey, ex-lead singer of the successful Celtic band Solas, has done. Kathy-Ann Tan went to see her during her Germany tour.

T:-)m's Nightshift: Book Reviews
Traditional Music at the European Fringe. T:-)m's regular book review column takes him this time to Ireland & Macedonia. "Photographs of musicians adorn the wall; also displayed are poems by Junior Crehan, the eighty-nine-year-old fiddler who has led these Sunday night sessions for more than fifty years. When Junior Crehan was born in 1908, Gleesons was a smaller establishment - a small pub in the farmhouse kitchen..."

Triakel, photo by The MollisTriakel - Gesänge vom 63. Breitengrad
Triakel pflegt nordschwedische Traditionen.

Christoph Weiherer - Bavarian Liedermaching

Wellies at Tonder Festival, photo by The Mollis30 Jahre Tønder Festival

Lang ist’s her? Ach was!

T:-)m's Nachtwache: Buchrezensionen
