Back in 2010, a first FolkWorld article on this topic compiled a long list of main Spanish radio and TV stations, that broadcast on-line folk music programs.[43] This one in 2013 is intended to update and extend that list, also adding some new on-line independent radio stations.
RNE (National Radio from Spain)
The Good News: Spain’s main broadcasting corporation keeps running most of the radio programs that were reviewed in 2010,[43] most of them through the channel RNE/RADIO-3 (www.rtve.es/radio/radio3). Let’s just mention a couple of novelties taking place since 2010.

The Less Good News: Several RNE programs on folk music had an unfortunate end in the latest years, following whatever decisions were taken by the management of Spain’s RNE corporation. At least for the moment in early 2013, the podcasts of these past programs are still accessible in the RNE web pages.
RADIO PROGRAM : *MUNDOFONÍAS* - PRESENTERS : Juan Antonio VÁZQUEZ & Araceli TZIGANE - INSTITUTION / COUNTRY : RNE (Radio Nacional de España) / SPAIN - CHANNEL : RADIO EXTERIOR (www.rtve.es/radio/radio-exterior) - PROGRAM URL : www.rtve.es/alacarta/audios/mundofoniasTheir program is focused on world music from all parts of the planet. Radio & TV Galega
The main broadcasting corporation in the autonomous community of Galicia (NW Spain) keeps running most of the radio programs that were reviewed before.[43]
One change to highlight in the RTVG (a.k.a. ‘A Galega’) web page is the way to access its radio and TV program podcasts. Let’s just follow some basic rules:
FOR RADIO PROGRAMS:
- Access the Galician broadcasting corporation front page: www.crtvg.es - Click on the buttons named ‘RG’ or ‘Radio Galega’ - Click either on:
FOR TV PROGRAMS:
- Access the Galician broadcasting corp front page: www.crtvg.es - Click on the button named ‘TVG’ (Televisión Galega) - Click on the buttons named ‘Programas’ or ‘Musicais’, and then search the name of the desired one thru the alphabetically ordered lists, such as:
In such TV program lists you may eventually find special programs/concerts entirely dedicated to well know Galician folk artists, such as: the gaita bagpiper Carlos Núñez, or the folk bands Luar Na Lubre and Milladoiro.
Other Broadcasting Corporations
Since Spain’s constitutional law was established in 1976, the country is divided in 17 Autonomous Communities. Several of them developed their own radio and TV broadcasting corporations under the founding and directives of their local governments. As seen above, Galicia is one that has put great effort on promoting its local traditional and folk music with a diversity of specialised radio and TV programs. Due to the deep economical crisis that Spain has entered since 2008, it is unsure for how long such diversity of broadcasting companies (and their many times questionable finances) will remain viable in the 2010’s. There are also some local radio stations that do not depend from any of those local governments, but they belong to public or private cultural centres, such as Madrid’s CÍRCULO DE BELLAS ARTES. Let’s review a few of those broadcasting institutions in three of Spain’s Autonomous Communities.
Andalucía
Flamenco is Spain’s most iconic music style. The autonomous community of Andalusia (South of Spain) is the mayor stronghold of this tradition. Therefore, its local radio and TV broadcasting corporation (RTVA, ‘Canal Sur’) has a radio channel entirely dedicated to this style of traditional music:
RADIO CHANNEL : *FLAMENCO RADIO* - INSTITUTION / COUNTRY : RTVA-Canal Sur / ANDALUSIA, SPAIN - CHANNEL : www.rtva.es - PROGRAM URLs : www.rtva.es/portal_rtva/web/pagina/seccion/1106/radio/flamencoradio and www.canalsuralacarta.es/directo/ver/flamenco-radioNon-stop Flamenco and Andalusian traditional music. The main radio channel of RTVA has also a program dedicated to flamenco:
RADIO PROGRAM : *PORTAL FLAMENCO* - PRESENTER : Manuel CURAO - INSTITUTION / COUNTRY : RTVA-Canal Sur / ANDALUSIA, SPAIN - CHANNEL : www.rtva.es - PROGRAM URL : www.canalsuralacarta.es/radio/programa/portal-flamenco/142Program specialized on flamenco music.
Asturias
Galicia’s neighbour region in the east is the autonomous community of Asturias (N Spain). Its main broadcasting corporation is the RTPA (Radio-Televisión del Principado de Asturias) has the web page: www.rtpa.es. Although Asturias folk music is comparable to the one in Galicia (bagpipes,‘Celtic’ tendencies, etc...), the offer of traditional music programs sensibly more limited.

Independent On-line Radio Stations
Besides the programs in formal radio broadcasting corporations like all the above ones, there are radio programs made in several parts of Spain produced by small groups of folk music fans. They can be easily accessible in the internet. Many of them are mostly dedicated to Celtic music. It is right to say that today’s digital communications via internet, are absolutely diluting traditional concepts such as: record company, radio station, TV program, magazine, ... Anybody with an adequate level of information compiled in a collection of digital files (text, sound, images), can establish its own space for broadcasting whatever. The key factor is on the added value. The following programs are in many cases adding very valuable interviews with interesting opinions from relevant folk music artists (in most cases only presented in Spanish language). There are quite a few others, but for now let’s start with the following four programs. The first two of them are edited through the folk music portal RADIO CRÓNICA FOLK MUSICAL (www.rcfm.es) created by Antonio MARTÍNEZ – CORZO in the city of Merida (Badajoz, Extremadura, Central South Spain).

The program web pages are in written in Spanish, English, Norwegian, Portuguese, French, Italian and German. You can hear a lot of songs and a few interviews with Spanish Celtic and folk bands. Since 2005, the crew from AIRES CELTAS also supports the organization in of a yearly meet of Celtic musicians in Granada: ‘Encuentro de Músicos con Aires Celtas’ (www.6encuentromusicos.supervivientesmusic.com).
