Gespielt wird sie von Azmari genannten Sänger-Poeten, die durch das Land ziehen und ihre musikalische Kultur erhalten und verbreiten.</p> <p>Neben den traditionellen Musikformen entwickelte sich ab den 1950ern vor allem in den Großstädten eine vitale Populärmusik, die verschiedene westliche und einheimische Stile miteinander verknüpfte. Als Grundlage dienten dabei neben den traditionellen Musikformen die Militärmusik der seit den 1920er Jahren sich zunehmender Beliebtheit erfreuenden Militärorchester, zu den bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten zählten die der Armee, der Polizei und der Kaiserlichen Leibwache. Neben diesen gab es allerdings auch Solisten wie den Saxophonisten Getatchew Mekurya, der traditionelle Gesangsstile auf sein Saxophonspiel anwandte und häufig mit <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Jazz" title="Free Jazz">Free Jazz</a>-Saxophonisten wie <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornette_Coleman" title="Ornette Coleman">Ornette Coleman</a> und <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Ayler" title="Albert Ayler">Albert Ayler</a> verglichen wurde.</p> <p>Diese bereits ungewöhnliche Kombinationen erhielt in den 1960ern eine weitere Wendung, als durch Musiker wie <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizunesh_Bekele" title="Bizunesh Bekele">Bizunesh Bekele</a> westliche Stile wie <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm%27n%27Blues" title="Rhythm'n'Blues" class="mw-redirect">Rhythm'n'Blues</a> und <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul" title="Soul">Soul</a> integriert wurden oder durch <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulatu_Astatke" title="Mulatu Astatke">Mulatu Astatke</a> <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz" title="Jazz">Jazz</a> und <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateinamerikanische_Musik" title="Lateinamerikanische Musik">lateinamerikanische Musik</a>. Von herausragender Bedeutung ist auch <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilahun_Gesesse" title="Tilahun Gesesse">Tilahun Gesesse</a>, der bis heute als  Stimme Äthiopiens gilt und in den 1960er Jahren vom Orchester der Kaiserlichen Leibwache begleitet wurde.</p> <p>Auch in den 1970er Jahren setzte sich diese Entwicklung noch fort, Orchester wie die Wallias Band entwickelten in dieser Zeit Analogien zum frühen <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk_(Musik)" title="Funk (Musik)">Funk</a> eines <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Brown" title="James Brown">James Brown</a>. Mit dem Sturz des Kaisers und der beginnenden Militärdiktatur allerdings flüchtete die Mehrzahl der etablierten Künstler, durch diesen Aderlass und die restriktiven Bedingungen der Diktatur verlor die äthiopische Populärmusik ihr hohes Niveau. Bekannte Künstler dieser Zeit waren Ethio Stars, Roha Band und der Sänger Neway Debebe. Im Ausland zu großem Erfolg kam <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aster_Aweke" title="Aster Aweke">Aster Aweke</a>, die ihre ersten Aufnahmen noch Mitte der 1970er in Addis Abeba machte, danach allerdings in die USA ging. Mal TFF in Rudolstadt und schon zum 10. Mal wird die RUTH, der deutsche Weltmusikpreis, dabei sein. Das Preisträgerkonzert ist mittlerweile aus dem Festivalprogramm nicht mehr wegzudenken. Die Deutsche RUTH geht diesmal ans Meer, die Globale RUTH 2010 ins multikulturelle Berlin.
